“Nepalese culture is unique for its diversity, so I would like a lot of people to know and enjoy various cultures in Nepal through Nepali Week”, Shashi Bhushan said.
Bhushan, an APU second-year student who majors in APM from Nepal, and he is involved in many activities including the Parade of Nepali Week held in Dec. 17 - Dec. 21 as a sub-leader. According to him, the Nepalese culture has its diversity in the language, religion, custom. For example, though he is from Nepal, his mother tongue is not Nepalese.
The parade of Nepali Week was held on Monday. In this parade, members there had three dances which were Khukuri dance, girls dance and couple dance. Khukuri dance means the army in Nepalese, and male members danced in this dance. Girls dance is danced by female members dressed up in traditional dresses, and the other is danced by boys and girls.
“When we were preparing for this parade, we had a few troubles”, Shashi said. They had three months for preparing this parade. However, three months was too short for them, and they could not practice dances with all members frequently, because members could not fit their plan to the group practice well. Therefore they had no choice to practice those dances, excluding personal practices.
In addition to a term for the preparation, Shashi feared if audiences would come to this parade or not, due to the weather outside. APU is on the mountain, and the wind is usually high on this campus, so in the winter season, Shashi was worried that it would be too cold for people to join the parade held on the outside.
Those were his anxieties for the parade, but in fact they could succeed their dance and audiences came to see this parade. “I appreciate members’ hard working and audiences’ activeness,” Shashi said.
For Shashi, the highlight of this parade was the end of this parade, because this parade existed to open the ceremony, Nepali Week. At the same time that this parade was over, Nepali Week was started. This is why the end of this parade was its highlight for him.
He appreciated members of this parade as well as the audience, because most of the participants came from other countries. Thus, not only the audience knew about the Nepali culture, but participants also knew about it through Nepali Week. “I am grateful to all participants as well as the audience of this parade for taking their interests in the Nepalese culture, and I hope they will enjoy Nepali Week”, Shashi said.
