Mina Nagashima is a second-year student at APU, and now she is a Teaching Assistant(TA) in multicultural collaborative workshop(MCW) class and resident assistants(RA)

She started working as an RA in E Ⅱ building from her third semester. At first, she was afraid to become an RA because she didn’t want to use her private time such as summer vacation and daily life for other people, and she was not good at doing time management because of her free-spirited personality.

But she wanted to try new things and her best friend’s decision to apply RA inspired her. Because she spent most of the time with her, the influence of the best friend’s decision was big for Nagashima.

“Talking with new people motivated me, so I really like the environment of AP house”, said Nagashima. She has liked to interact with new people since her childhood, so the life of AP house always excited her.

Especially, she enjoyed a lot to organize the building events which are held every month. She has already planned a football competition, a picnic in Beppu Park and Takoyaki party. “Although it is not easy to make those events successful, it feels great when I accomplish it with other teammate of RA”, she said. However, she also said, “I sometimes feel worried while working as an RA because the job is always monitored by many people”.

By experiencing the events of AP house and every meeting with other RA, she gradually came to have responsibility and confidence. Her skill in time management improved at the same time.

And one more activity outside her class is working as a TA. She is in charge of MCW class which for first-year students, doing discussions by her students or making a project in a group mixed international and domestic students.

She applied to be a TA “ to get the skill as a reader and confidence of presenting in front of the people is my goal”, she said. ?“Working as a TA is an efficient way to achieve those goals”.

Although she is not sure about her dream yet for the future, she is planning to do an internship in South of Africa and go to Italy to support refugee assistance works after finishing the job of RA.

Nagashima has some advice for new students. “Don’t be afraid to try new things which you are interested in. Don’t miss the opportunity that you can find at APU.”
