“I came to APU, because of the multicultural circumstances. Moreover, I wanted to get broad connections with the world without any boundary. This is why I am here.” Ani says.
Asraful Islam Ani is a second-year student in APU from Bangladesh, and he is 21 years old. He heard from his elder brother about this university, and he decided to go there.
He often joins some home staying in Japanese family. In that activity, he learns a variety of Japanese culture. For example, by helping farm works of his host family, he learned Japanese styles of agriculture. In addition, he was invited to join a regional festival by them, he participated in that festival. “It was really interesting because I could learn about Japanese regional relationship.” Ani says.
Secondly, he has been a member of STP for a year. The main theme of this circle is a charity, working for children who are facing some troubles with poverty to continue their study. For example, they hold an event to have an English class for those children.
When he entered Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, he started studying Japanese from memorizing Hiragana and Katakana. Now he is able to talk with Japanese people fluently in Japanese. He has done various things to improve his Japanese language.
For example, he often tries to talk with Japanese friends and international friends using the Japanese language. In those conversations, he learned informal Japanese descriptions which are not written in Japanese textbooks.
Ani lives with a Japanese friend. When he studies Japanese grammar, his Japanese roommate, Ryo, often helps him. Because of this he understands not only speaking Japanese but also its grammar.
He also likes listening to music, including Japanese one, and he often listens to Japanese pop music, rock music, rap music.
Furthermore, in his house, watching anime, Japanese movie and TV series are his one of his hobbies. By watching them, he learns Japanese culture as well as language.
In these ways, he has an environment surrounded by the Japanese language for 24 hours.
“I want to say to my all Japanese folk that I like Japanese rap songs although I do not understand all the word perfectly, and my most favorite word is Ya-bai meaning amazing. Lastly, I want to say, Mina-san itsumo ganbatte-kudasai meaning Good luck everyone.” His daily life in Japan is immersed in Japanese language and Japanese culture.
